Teleseminar Etiquette

July 9, 2011

As a coach or speaker, hosting or speaking at a teleseminar is a great way to be heard and get your message out to a broad audience very quickly.  There are a couple things that speakers like for their attendees to do, and things they need to remember when they themselves attend a teleseminar.

You should treat a teleseminar as you would a seminar that you had to attend in-person.  If you come into that seminar late, you don’t announce yourself, especially when someone is speaking.  You quietly try to take a seat, to as not to disturb the person hosting the event.  The same should be true in a teleseminar.  If one comes onto the call late, you do not have to announce yourself.  Odds are, the host has started on-time and is probably well into his/her speech.

Also, in a regular seminar, an attendee pays attention to the speaker, takes notes, or something else relative to the event.  They aren’t on the phone, or playing a game or something else that would allow them to not take in all the information they are receiving.  This is the same way one should be when attending a teleseminar.  One should not be washing dishes, watching TV, or having all the other distractions that could be going on.  The host has provided this content for you.  And if you just can’t avoid a disturbance (children, animals, etc.), then by all means, please use the mute button.

This helps to keep the flow of the seminar going.  In addition, it makes it easier to edit the audio if necessary.  If you are hosting a teleseminar, hopefully your attendees already realize this information, but some still do not.  Some just don’t realize and then others could have some sort of phone/computer malfunction and they just can’t help it.
