What Are the Characteristics of a Great Speaker or Coach?

May 10, 2010

Being a great speaker or coach is a lot more than just having something to say, or professing your ability to help others.  There are some fundamentals that are needed, whether you are a speaker, coach, or trainer.

Five Characteristics of a great Speaker/Coach are:

  1. Practice what you preach – How can you help if you have not walked the path yourself?
  2. Humility – Humility helps you to keep an open mind and not judge, so that you are better able to help.
  3. Sincere desire to help clients – If you truly want to help your clients, you expect to give them nothing but your best.
  4. Open to new ideas and ways of thinking – Life is always a learning process, and if you close yourself off to ideas, you miss opportunities, for you and your clients.
  5. Ethical – What good is a coach/speaker with no morals?

That does not mean that these are the only five characteristics a speaker/coach should have.  There are many more desirable traits that one should possess, and of course, the more the better.  These are just a basic foundation, and there is plenty of room to build and grow.

Before you decide that this is what you want to do with your life, really consider these characteristics.  Mainly, consider your need to help others.  If you are not even remotely a people-person, this is not the right industry for you.  You are going to come into contact with people from all walks of life, with many different problems and situation.  Knowing that and having such a longing to help definitely means that you are on the right path.

Are You Charismatic?

May 5, 2010

Having charisma is not something that you can learn.  It is something that comes from within, although it can be developed.  Being a speaker, coach, or trainer, there is a certain magnetism that you should have.  People should be drawn to you, in order to want to hear what you have to say.

That is not to say that charisma is all you need in order to be great at speaking or coaching, but it is a major factor.  Being good at speaking, and having pertinent information your audience need and wants is key.  But if you have no charm or appeal, how do you get that audience to hear your message?

Not only should people be drawn to you, but also to your cause.  If they have no interest in what you are selling, no one wants to hear it.  How you deliver your message is also very important.  Do you rush your presentation?  Do you speak eloquently and clearly?  Do you enunciate?

Aside from that, is your information well researched and prepared? Do you have your main facts and supporting information gathered and prepared? Being charismatic is only the beginning, but remember there is a lot more involved.  It begins before the presentation, and continues after the presentation is over.
